Who am I, really?
God cannot be “seen finish” – and you, my friend, cannot be “seen finish” either, because you are made in His image.
A very special song attached to this letter; Chasing After You (cover) by Davidic Minstrel. You can listen to it as you read.
If I am told to describe who I am, am I right to say I really can't put who I am into words?
I'm just a really big ball of wonder, and I’m amazed by the variety of expressions I possess and manifest.
It just never occurs to me to say one thing.
I’ve had to send my biography to a number of events I’ve been invited to speak at, and each time I start to type, I just know this still doesn’t hit me the way it should. It doesn't quite capture the hunger I carry. I really just find it hard to articulate my thoughts in that regard.
Well, can you blame me? God’s person is expressed in limitless ways.
God cannot be “seen finish” – and you, my friend, cannot be “seen finish” either, because you are made in His image.
You are made in His likeness. You are His representation.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." – Gen 1:27.
This leads me to a question many people, especially those who are just beginning to discover themselves, often ask:
Who am I?
It’s not a confusing question. In fact, it’s one of the easiest to answer, but only if you’re asking the right way.
You've probably heard a phrase similar to this: "The creator of a thing knows all about what He has created and so knows how it should function."
Yes, that’s the common analogy we use to help people understand how to approach the journey of self-discovery.
But today, I hope you do more than understand. I hope you meet you.
I am a deep lover of God and everything His Kingdom stands for, and I am spending the rest of my life pursuing this course. So guess what? We will be using His Scriptures.
You are like God, and that means you are layered — not in the sense of being distant, but in the sense of being rich, complex, and eternally deep. The more we walk with Him, the more He reveals. And even then, we’ve only just begun.
In a similar way, finding yourself is a lifelong journey. This is why, in different seasons of your life, you may feel like a different person. You develop new passions, discover things you love, explore new dimensions of your creativity… and wonder, “Wait, I’m good at this too?” You're not becoming someone else; you're still You. You're just being unleashed, unwrapped — like God, your Father, your look-alike.
So, how do you really find yourself? First things first. The veil must be removed.
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." – 2 Corinthians 3:18
The first part says “with open face” – meaning the veil has been removed. If you haven’t given your life to Christ, the veil is still there. And unless the veil is removed, you can’t even see the glory of God, talk less of reflecting, representing, or looking like Him.
You cannot find yourself until you find God, because you were made in His image. So it only makes sense that you behold what you have always looked like to know You.
Until you are born again, until you receive Christ and start to walk with God, the true knowledge of who you are will remain blurry.
Only then will you start seeing God clearly, understanding your identity, and becoming who He made you to be.
The second part says: "... beholding as in a glass/mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
From the fall of man in Genesis, we lost the glory and purity that came with the image of God (Romans 3:23 — “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”)
So the image remains, but it's fractured and requires restoration.
It's like a broken mirror: the image is still there, but it’s cracked and blurry.
We still bear the image, but we no longer reflect it the way we were meant to.
But when Jesus came, He came to restore us back to that image. So now, the more we behold Him – the more we look into the mirror (that is, Jesus) – the more we are changed and restored. Back into the original design.
Not all at once, but from glory to glory.
Layer by layer.
Piece by piece.
Back into the ORIGINAL DESIGN.
That deep hunger inside you? That void? That search for more? It's not confusion. If anything at all, it’s a holy memory.
Your spirit remembers who you were meant to be. And it longs to be restored to that very design!
The mirror is the Word.
You can never truly find yourself outside of God. It's not possible (kolesele l’aye🙂).
Every time you look into the mirror of His Word, every time you seek Him, you carry a new dimension of Him. And any dimension of God you encounter, you begin to express – you reflect.
You have just encountered another glimpse of yourself, again. Why? You were made in His image. Like, do you get???
So the right question is no longer: “How do I find myself?” It becomes: How do I know God and learn of Him?
Because in knowing God, your journey of self-discovery begins.
How do I know God?
Knowing God requires effort. If you want to know a person, you study them – their words, their ways, their works. You spend time with them. You seek them.
Remember how you stalked your crush?😗
Ehehn... that's what I’m saying. The way you fed on resource/material you could lay your hands on. It's the same with God.
The person of God is Jesus.
"He is the image of the invisible God."—Colossians 1:15
“The express image of His person.”—Hebrews 1:3
“God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of His glory in the FACE of Jesus Christ.”—2 Corinthians 4:6
The Bible is your resource.
The Word is your resource.
Jesus is the Word.
Scripture is your mirror.
Looking into it is how you learn God, and in learning God, you find yourself.
Finally,
Finding yourself may not be dramatic. But it will come – through surrender, through seasons, through daily beholding.
Because ultimately: Your purpose is to know God and to make Him known.
And remember, in knowing God, you find who you are. In finding who you are, you discover how He wants to be revealed through you.
It’s all interwoven.
One leads to the other.
So start here: Know Him.
Don’t worry, the grace to do that has been supplied.️✨
I will stop here now. I hope to hear from you about this subject soon.
PS: Last month, I was invited to speak at an event on “Finding yourself in your 20s.” But the Holy Spirit has the best template. So, everything you had just read is a summary of my notes.
Love,
Seyi.
